Spilled Gallstone Abscesses Mimicking Liver Metastases

We present a unique case highlighting the difficulty relating to the specificity of CT-PET following a case where gallstone abscess mimicked colorectal liver metastases. CT-PET is often used in the diagnostic work-up of patients with colorectal liver metastatic disease; aiding staging and patient management. However, care must be taken in the interpretation of ‘hot spots’ and must be considered...

Streptococcus milleri liver abscesses associated with leiomyosarcoma of the ileum.

A number of case reports of pyogenic liver abscess due to Streptococcus milleri have appeared in recent years (Bateman, Eykyn and Phillips, 1975; Reid and Davidson, 1976). The source of infection has either not been apparent or has been localised to the gastrointestinal tract. We describe a case of multiple abscesses in a man who turned out to have a malignant small bowel tumour, an association...

Colorectal Cancer Associated with Streptococcus anginosus Bacteremia and Liver Abscesses

Streptococcus anginosus is part of the normal flora of the human gastrointestinal tract. Their ability to cause abscesses is very unique and sets them apart from the rest of the streptococci groups. While an association of group D streptococcus bacteremia and endocarditis with colorectal carcinoma is well established, S. anginosus infections are rarely implicated with colonic malignancy. We pre...

Streptococcus intermedius liver abscesses and colon cancer: a case report.

Certain species of bacteria are known to be associated with colorectal cancer. We report a case of adenocarcinoma of the colon with bacteraemia and liver abscesses due to Streptococcus intermedius. The isolation of this organism should prompt investigation for colorectal neoplasm, which may be present but asymptomatic, without metastases, and therefore at a curative stage.

Liver Abscesses Caused by Streptococcus intermedius in an Immunocompromised Patient

Streptococcus intermedius is a Gram-positive bacterium that is part of the normal flora in the oral cavity, as well as in the upper respiratory, female urogenital, and gastrointestinal tracts. It may also be found in human feces and is the dominant species found in subgingival plaque. We present a case of a 50-year-old man who came to the emergency room with abdominal pain for weeks associated ...
